On the fifth day of summer vacation...

We went out to dinner and to member night at the Memphis Zoo!

They open from 6-9 pm and have lots of special activities, including, touch the big python:

We don't make it down to the farm much (pandas, polar bears, and the Teton Trek are popular with Ryan), but I wanted Jillian to see/touch some animals, so we went down there.

My camera batteries died at this point, so from here on out, it's iPhone pictures:

The pandas had gone to bed, but we saw the polar bears being fed and took a few pictures in the Northwest Passage:

Then, it was back to the Old Faithful fountain. Apparently, getting wet is encouraged on member nights, as many children came in swim suits and parents spread out towels. I was just thinking of our visit on Friday and had Ryan wear sandals and brought a change of clothes. Perfect!

Even better, a little Sonic on the way home! They had BOGO shakes, so we gave the second one to Jillian who was a sticky, happy mess by the time we arrived home!

On the third day of summer vacation...

We went swimming twice!

First, at Lucas's birthday party:

Where they also had a pinata:

And then at the Hanlon's. Ryan picked right up where he left off last summer. Swimming easily in the shallow end where he can stand and jumping off the diving board and swimming to the side without a life jacket or swimmies in the deep end.

Poor Jillian had a fever, so she and daddy stayed home. I wonder how she's going to like the water this year?

On the second day of summer vacation...

We went to the zoo with some neighbor friends!

We waited outside for them to arrive:

Then checked out the bears playing at Teton Trek:

And could not pass up the Old Faithful fountain (have you heard how hot it's been in Memphis lately?):

The little ones just watched (Jillian didn't want to have anything to do with the water!):

The bird exhibit just opened for the season:

And Jillian was interested in the birds!

The boys went to the Redbird's game tonight, too, with other neighbor friends and stayed late for the frieworks!

Last Day!

Today was Ryan's last day at St. George's. He will be going to St. Francis in the fall for kindergarten. This was a tough decision (especially with me going back to teach at the upper school part time!). We love the school, it is just a bit of a stretch for us to continue to afford it without a teacher discount.

Today was his last day and class party. An ice cream truck stopped by and everyone was excited (and sticky)!

Ryan and Sarah:

Ryan and Griffin:

Another Milestone for Ryan!

Somebody wanted tie shoes and I said, only if you learn how to tie. He did in just one day!

Date Night

Friday night, while in Charlotte, Mom & Dad kept the kids and Scott & I got a date night! The best part about it was that we found something really fun and kind of spontaneous to do. We don't have the opportunity to do that much these days, but we used to do it a lot before kids. You know, just get in the car and go find someplace cool that you haven't been before (with no one whining about being bored or needing a snack or a potty break).

Anyway, we went down to NoDa (Northern Davidson) which has these Friday night gallery walks. It was hopping! A fun drunk girl celebrating her 21st birthday took our picture!

While wandering, we discovered Shawn Mullins was playing. He had the hit "Rockabye" many years ago. But friends of ours (hi Cory & John!) were fans of his before the hit, and other friends (hi Debbie!) are still big fans now. I don't think we would have planned to go see him in concert, but since we were there, we figured, what the heck!

After his set, a band called the Blue Dogs came on and they were lots of fun too. Great night!

Charlotte Visit

The other reason for our trip to North Carolina was to see my cousins whom we hadn't seen in seven or so years. They live in Connecticut and have two young boys Ryan and Jillian's ages whom we hadn't met! Now that my aunt lives down the street from my parents, we are hoping to see them more often!

We arrived in Charlotte early Friday morning, and after some sleep (thanks mom & dad!), we waited for the Conrad's to arrive!

Jillian waited in her chair.

Gramps and Ryan played checkers in the garden to pass the time:

More waiting on the back patio:

And then, they were here! Kyle and Ryan immediately began running around together, and Jillian was quick to share with Mason (who is only 6 days younger than she is!):

We took a walk up to the neighborhood park:

Gramps pushed Ryan and Kyle on the tire swing:

Jillian and Mason swung on their swings:

Then Jillian needed more action and headed for the slides:

The boys decided to join her:

Saturday and Sunday morning we went to Pinehurst.
Then it was back to Charlotte, for a cook out and water fun! Mason (with his Mama, Sonya) and Jillian watched the fun:

Boys in the pool:

My silly boy:

And, who says you can only get wet in the pool? Watch out for Chris!

The boys got ahold of his weapons:

Not to be outdone, Chris pulls out the big guns:

"Nanny-nanny-boo-boo! You can't catch me!"

Then, the boys got very creative:

Mason and Jillian had moved inside by this point. She gave him a kiss, but of course wouldn't repeat it for the camera.

Monday morning before we left to return home, the boys went to see a real Nascar (Kenny Wallace)! They got a tour of the whole place and the man was very patient and interesting. Gramps can't wait to take them to some bigger name Nascar shops later (when it's not speed week)!
