Growth Spurt

In the week after our guests left, both Scott and I thought Jillian looked and felt bigger. She also awoke 3 times at 3 am to eat (which, is unlike her, I am lucky enough to report).

Today, Ryan and I confirmed that Jillian had a growth spurt! She is now 12 lbs 6 oz!

Picking Blueberries

We have picked blueberries at Jones Orchard, and Ryan and I have picked blueberries in Maryland (Scott and I, too, many moons ago). But I really wanted to check out this blueberry plantation in Mississippi that I had read about many times. They were even featured in Southern Living this month as the best place to pick blueberries in the south.

So we went today (after a great morning at the Memphis Farmer's Market downtown!). Jillian got her third state, and we got a few pounds of sweet blueberries!

Vacation Bible School

We tried Vacation Bible School for the first time this year at our church, St. Ann's. I was nervous...I knew Ryan could handle being there, but I was worried that since he didn't really know anyone else doing it, he might have trouble. I was wrong on many fronts.

We got there the first day, he found his group and sat right down, jumping right back into my sweet, school-boy Ryan (no matter how crazy he gets for us at home, I can usually count on him to behave for other people like teachers and babysitters. Such a nice thing). He didn't even kiss me good-bye.

Then, it turns out there were people we knew there...his friend Emily from soccer:

and a daughter of a friend of mine, Ainsley, whom we drove to VBS most of the week, and whom Ryan is now totally enamored with!

He loved his group leaders,

the singing and dancing,

the arts and crafts,

and I think he will do it again next summer and have an easier time starting PRE and doing the children's liturgy, all of which he is old enough for in the fall.
Funny little story: I overheard them one of the days I picked Ryan up, but I couldn't quite make out what the were saying. Later, I was reading Ryan some of the thins on the sheet he brought home and when I said, "God is Powerful," Ryan shouted, "Fear God!" I thought, OK, I don't think I want my child fearing God, but if that's what they are saying...A few days later, I was reading the stickers on a bracelet he made and they said, "Fear Not!" and Ryan verified that he had been confused and that was what they had been saying. OH! That's much better.

Jillian is making these crazy noises lately. Love to hear her!

She also seems to be trying to shove both hands in her mouth, but that's ok, too.

Some cute pictures mom got this weekend.

And she's starting to puch up a bit when she's on her tummy.

No Life Vest Required

Ryan has been going around telling everyone, "I can swim without my life vest." He is not Michael Phelps yet, but he is getting better. I am just gald he is excited about it again. Now we can work on improving!

Here he is with his swim instructor, Miss Haley.

Happy Father's Day!

This was a weekend of celebrations! On Friday night we celebrated my birthday and Katy's.

Mom made red velvet cake, yum!

Then Sunday, we got to celebrate Jillian's baptism and Father's Day! We don't always get to see our dads on Father's Day anymore, so to have them both with us was a special treat!

And another one of my favorite dads:

Jillian's baptism

Jillian was baptized into the Holy Roman Catholic Church today. It was a very special celebration. We got lucky and were the only baptism following the 11:30 mass.

Her godparents:

She fussed a little here, but I think she was tired.

Ryan held her candle (until wax dripped on him):

One more of Jillian:

and her silly (but handsome) godfather:

We welcomed a house full of visitors this weekend for Jillian's baptism. Nanny & Gramps, Aunt Katy, Grammy, Grandad and their dog Casey, and Mark and Shelby. Everyone wanted to play with Jillian.

Aunt Katy and Nanny:

Mark (Jillian's godfather):

Jillian took an awesome nap on Shelby:

We also enjoyed meeting and playing with Casey. Jillian wasn't so sure at first,

but got used to his licks:

Ryan found a friend who never tired of tickles and tackles:

And who would play in his fort with him:

We also took him on a walk to the Bartlett dog park up the street:

Casey was a very good dog. His only transgression all weekend was getting ahold of this:

and it's so cute, I think we have to let it slide. I promise you this is not posed! He found the pacifier on the floor and picked it up like this. Got a second one out of her car seat on Monday morning. Needless to say, I bought a few new ones. :)

After catching some with Lucas a few weeks ago, Ryan's been wanting to do more, especially since he has saved jars just for the purpose.

So, tonight, we walked to the park and stayed until it got dark enough to catch some fireflies (and a few bug bites).

From our garden

The harvest has begun. We have picked a few cucumbers (they make a "D" Ryan said):

and now some broccoli:

Stay tuned, there are lots of green tomatoes and the melons and sunflowers are growing fast!

Do I Look Like a Boy?

I don't really want to dress Jillian in frilly pinks and purples all the time. And she still looks like a girl to me. And it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Right?

This is a cute little turtle outfit that was Ryan's. It's Baby Gap and still so soft! Hard to pass it up!

And I wanted something for 4th of July later this summer. I think she looks good in red!

Friday night, on my way to drop Ryan and Jillian off with Scott and head to the concert with Amy and Barb, I got stuck in a major storm. I had seen it on TV before I left home, but thought we'd make it to the office before it came through, and was running late, so I headed out anyway.

I was going down Appling (right by Bellevue) when the brunt of it hit, and I was terrified! The radio said there was a report of a tornado in Midtown heading toward Ellendale (near my home). The rain and wind were very strong, and I didn't think I'd be able to see a tornado if it was coming. I was also not about to take my two kids out of the car and get in a ditch, so I desparately looked for a store or someplace we could go into.

Got us all into a gas station finally (getting soaked in the process) and stayed there until things calmed down.

Looking back now, it seems a bit silly. But I saw this tree come down:

and I freaked a bit. Controlled freaking, mind you, because I was trying very hard not to freak Ryan out.

Seems that the worst of the storm hit north of town (Bartlett and Millington) and a small tornado did touch down just a few miles west of where we were. I haven't seen too much house damage, but lots of trees down, especially Bradford Pears:

This house at the entrance to our neighborhood must have lost 6 or so trees. Scott now wants to chop our small Bradford Pear down before a storm can take it.

We were without power for about 23 hours, but other than that, we were ok.

This morning, another storm came through with massive amounts of rain. The water retention pond actually ran over it's banks and directly into the pond in the next neighborhood.

And Ryan went out in it to get the newspaper!

Happy Birthday to Me!

The week before my 35th birthday, I found this (and I am secure enough with myself to post it here):

This is my first grey hair! I am not going to get too upset about it, because I feel pretty lucky to have made it this far grey free, but it is kind of a milestone, you know. And I did finally pull it out, but I am sure it (and others) will be back.

In happier birthday news, I got a zoom lens from my family:

So now, I can focus in on different objects, but from farther away! Thanks Scott!!!

Got to swim with Ryan:
And tonight I went to see Sugarland
and Keith Urban
with my friends Amy & Barb (and Heather, not pictured)
