New Bike!

We gave Ryan his birthday present a little early so he would have it for vacation.

The trunk of Scott's car was the only place I could think to hide it that Ryan wouldn't accidentally stumble across it. He was pleasantly surprised and excited.

We took a long walk (us)/ride (him) and it was great! Yet another thing that makes him grow more independent. Loved watching him get further away from us.

And, just FYI. Pay the extra $10 to have the store assemble it. Directions usually stink!

Butterflies

We had a fun dinner at the Paulo's home Sunday night where Ryan and Lucas pretended to be butterflies. Sweet.

Fishing Rodeo

A little disappointing. When I registered Ryan, I asked the guy if we absolutely had to get there at the 6 am starting time. He explained that they had been feeding the fish at that time, so they should be biting then. So we hauled ourselves out of bed way too early and headed over there. There were lots of people and we felt a bit out of our element. This was our first fishing rodeo and we were novice fishermen.
Ryan looked cute, he caught a little brim, and we learned a lot (mostly that we needed some other supplies to be successful). But we did not catch anything nearly as big as what those around us were catching. There were some BIG catfish. And I felt a little misled by the man who registered us, because I expected to catch fish one right after the other.

Well, the disappointment did not last long. After a short nap back home, Ryan and Scott went out to get some new supplies. Later that evening, they went back over to our little pond to fish. I got a phone call saying, "Bring over the camera!" Look what they caught:

Ask Scott to tell you the story sometime (he tells it better since he was there). We had never seen catfish in our pond, so as he's reeling it in, he's thinking he's got a log. Then, since it was moving, he thought, maybe a turtle (we saw two get caught at the finshing rodeo). He was shocked to see the catfish! Then Ryan caught two more on his little Scooby-Doo rod, but they were too strong and broke his line before he could get them.

Now we need to learn how to gut them and cook them!

Gymnastics

I stopped in to the last day of gymnastics camp today to see what it was all about. It was fun to watch Ryan and his friend, Arlan, try out all the moves. It was also fun to see him in this setting, listening to the teacher, taking turns with the other kids, and trying new things out. I know he's going to do great in school next year!

More piano

Ryan found a book of Spanish songs that a fellow teacher gave me. It is just the words, but he seemed to know what to do with a music book. I better sign him up for lessons soon!

Peanut Butter and ?

Ryan wanted to make his own lunch today. That's not strawberry jelly in there, that's ketchup! He ate 3/4 of it and enjoyed it!

Proud Mama

Ryan started his first summer camp today-tumbling. My friend Kellie is in charge of summer camps and she told me last week that I could not be one of "those moms" who could not leave their child behind. I assured her I would not be (especially after she called me on it :) ), but I was nervous. I have always walked Ryan into school, he hasn't done the carpool drop off before. She said I could walk him up the first day, but that was it.

This morning Ryan seemed a bit more excited about "gynastics" than he had over the weekend and I told him that the big boys just kiss their mommies and jump out at carpool. Could he do that? He seemed to think he could, but he would just "blow me a kiss."

We got there and he did just that. It helped that Kellie's son, Ryan's buddy, Arlan, was there for tumbling, too. He got out and never looked back. And when I picked him up, he proclaimed it "fun."

Kudos, too, to Kellie, for having such an amazingly organized system. Because of the info she sent me, I knew just where to go, she had people there to get kids out of cars, and camp signs up so the kids knew just where to go. Awesome!

Piano

Back in May, our friend, Barb's neighbor had a moving sale. They were selling a piano at what I thought was a really good price, so I bought it. I've always wanted to play an instrument that was a bit more community-friendly; I've wanted soemthing that could bring music into my home. Something tells me Scott and I are not going to pull out our clarinet and trumpet and have a sing-along some evening!

Today, I finally had someone move it over to or house. It is over 100 years old and has a brinze plate running down the entire back, so it is a bit on the heavy side. It's finally here and now all we need is to tune it and take some lessons! Ryan played it today, and I was right, I am so happy to hear music in the house!

"Kung Pu Panda"

This is how Ryan pronounces the name of the movie we went to see on Monday with Parker. I wouldn't really say Ryan loved the movie (he had missed his nap and was a bit grumpy in the theatre), but he loves the idea of the movie and the main character "Po" the panda.

It was good, just a little violnt (it is, after all, a Kung Fu movie! Jack Black is very funny and the overall message is good.)

Bike Ride

Ryan and I went biking in Shelby Farms today while Scott played golf. He is a good buddy to have along on these rides and likes to help pump the tires. He also found a snake on the side of the trail (luckily it was dead!).

Spikey Hair Boy

Ryan spiked his hair up the other day before we went to the zoo and for the first time actually let me put mousse in it. He asked for it again this morning!

Fishing

Scott and Ryan have finally really gotten into fishing. They go to the "lake" across the street from our house and have caught many, many small fish. Ryan is now baiting his own hook, casting, waiting for the bobber to go under, reeling it in, and holding the large mouth bass by the mouth before he kisses it and lets it go. He caught three small fish right in a row in the few minutes I was out there taking pictures.

We've gotten fishing licenses, bought worms, and intend to participate in a fishing rodeo next weekend!

The Zoo

We went to the zoo today with Mason and Helen.

Swimming Lessons

Ryan is taking swimming lessons with his friend, Helen. We have been meeting at her house (she has a pool) three afternoons a week.

You may remember that last year, Ryan met my summer goal to jump off the side/diving board by the end of summer. This year I was hoping to get him swimming a bit more independently. When we went to Nashville over Memorial Day weekend, he swam iun the hotel pool and would not let go of Scott and I. Last Monday, he jumped right in Helen's pool and went to town in his swim vest. He's been almost non-stop ever since!

Some highlights:

We also checked out Helen's grandfather's horses that live behind their house.

Happy Father's Day!

A few highlights from our Father's Day.

We made Scott waffles for breakfast:

Took some pictures after church:

Watched some of the U.S. Open:

Then went over to Matt & Barb's house for dinner where I kept Ryan busy in their neighbor's pool while Scott watched the end of the Open in peace.

Also, stopped by to say hi to Heidi and Ian. Here's the new father with baby Aiden:

Somebody's birthday!

I had a nice relaxing birthday yesterday (thanks for all the emails, cards, and facebook shout-outs!). I got up for my morning walk, and when I had returned, the boys had pancakes waiting! That evening we went out to Bahama Breeze for dinner and then had chocolate cake together when we got home. Perfect.

Best Buddies

Parker came over to play yesterday and I took a few shots.

While I was away...

The boys stayed busy!

Friday night they met up with Parker and Mr. Bill and went camping at Parker's great-grandparent's farm. No pictures, but I hear it was a great time.

Saturday afternoon, they went to Mason's 4th birthday party at the Fire Museum of Memphis.
Parker was there, too! I didn't think there would be pictures of this either (except for the ones Melissa sent me) and then when I turned our camera on yesterday, I discovered these. Scott did a great job!

After that, they went on to a Memphis Redbird's baseball game where they met Arlan and Mr. Chris. They stayed for the whole thing and the fireworks after! It's no wonder they took Sunday off and just stayed home!

Who needs birthday cards?

When you could get this in the mail on the day of your birthday? Don't get me wrong, I love cards, but all three of these on my birthday?! What are the odds?

It's a Boy!

My friends Heidi and Ian welcomed their first baby last Friday, June 6. His name is Aiden, he was over 8 pounds and had a tricky beginning, but is doing great now and will probably be heading home tomorrow!

Congratulations Heidi and Ian!!!
