Day 4

Had a yummy breakfast of pancakes

made by John. These fuzzy pictures would be by me, and not Cory.

Scott, look what we found while we were packing up the car! Since we found it before we left, technically we could have left it behind, but Ryan was into it, so I figured it would be good entertainment. Who knows when it will appear again!

On the road we went through another tunnel,

and saw lots of this (not fun),

but we finally got to Philly and relaxed. Had dinner with Allison and Steve. Ryan and Ainsley played nicely in the backyard and went to bed reasonably well. Can't wait to see what tomorrow holds!

More Day 3

We got out of the house for lunch and a visit to the playground. Someone had a lot of energy to burn and it wasn't Noah!

This playground was extreme...not just a merry-go-round, but a sit-and-spin thing that someone grabbed the middle bar and spun you fast! We thought we were going to fall off when John spun us!

And a see saw that had springs, so you didn't just go back and forth, you bounced until your bottom came off the seat! It was fun as you can see below. Cory took some great pictures (thank you!!!).

Day 3

Good morning from Richmond! No car travel for us today!

We met baby Noah last night and got to play with him a bit this morning!

Day 2

Outside our hotel in Knoxville, about to get back on Route 40 for another few hours. Apparently we like sticking out our tongues...perhaps this will become ur little trademark for this trip.

Ryan and I know Route 40 fairly well after our many car trips. We know the good stops, we know that the clock changes from Central time to Eastern time around mile marker 340. We also know that there are two tunnels once you cross into North Carolina!

Ryan likes those! Looking forward to other tunnels on our trip: in Baltimore and the big Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel on our way home in a few weeks.

We got on the radio this morning! We called in to XMKids and talked to Kenny Curtis who played the Highway 40 song for us. Ask Ryan to sing it for you next time you see him.

Our first visit of the trip came this afternoon outside of Raliegh, North Carolina. We spent a few hours with my friend Kirsten and her new baby, Mae.

From there it was on through some storms, north on Route 95 to Richmond to Cory and John's!

Day 1

Ryan and I left today for our Summer East Coast tour. This is us pulling out of the driveway to go have lunch with Scott before getting on the road and spending lots of time on Route 40.

Ryan was great in the car and fell asleep 15 minutes before we got to the hotel in Knoxville.

With a successful night in the backyard, we thought we were ready to try the great outdoors! We went to Shelby Forest (northwest of us on the Mississippi River) which is still close enough to drive home should we decide it's not working out.

Everyone was excited. Scott & Ryan spent all Saturday morning getting the supplies together and loading the car. We got there (funny pictues as I checked us in)

and set up camp. Scott and Ryan collected wood,

Scott cooked dinner,

Ryan prepped the fire,

and roasted marshmallows.

The whole evening we sat around saying how fun it was and how we needed to do it again, maybe in September when it was cooler and we didn't have to sit quite so far away from the fire.

However, things took a slight turn at bedtime. Ryan took awhile to settle down (can deal with that), the air mattress got a leak (can buy a new one), and the mosquitoes got me pretty bad (need to buy new bug spray). So, not a disastrous end, but enough so that when Ryan awoke at 6am and the bugs were still biting, I was ready to make breakfast and head home.

Ryan's first taste of...

Cookie Dough!

We were making Grandmom Beatty's Chocolate Chippers for Daddy and Ryan couldn't resist, especially when he saw Mommy do it! :)

Our pool

Nothing big, just good times with Mason in our pool last Monday,

and his pool on Thursday.

Arts & Crafts

Here's some more of what we are working on this summer:

Cutting (usually strips of paper).

and Coloring.

It's somebody's birthday!

And it's Father's Day, too! The celebration here began with breakfast in bed (french toast made with croissants - yum!) and is continuing with a lot of golf watching!

Also, a pool picture. Ryan and I are having a tough summer vacation: go to the pool, eat lunch, take naps, get together with friends, go to the playground. Whew! Wipes us out! :)

Back home

Lots of play time with Ryan. Monday we tried finger paints for the first time!

From this weekend...

I flew up to DC to take my sister away to celebrate her 30th birthday. We drove to Fayetteville, West Virginia, home of the New River Gorge and Bridge.

This is the highest arch bridge in the western hemisphere and is the site of the annual Bridge Day on the third Saturday in October. They close down the bridge and over 800 BASE jumpers jump off of it!

Her big surprise was that we were going climbing and rappelling for a few hours on Saturday. We had a great guide through Hard Rock Climbing and he found us some great beginner's spots. It was amazing! The whole place was beautiful! Plenty of opportunities to hike, too.

If you do ever venture here, we recommend Pies and Pints, Sedona Grille, and Cathedral Cafe (wonderful breakfast!).

From last week...

While our respective husbands were out of town, Kellie and I met in Arlington for a picnic and some serious playground time with the kids. The city of Arlington put forth a great community effort to raise money for and build a playground of dreams. One of those big, complex wooden ones with towers, lots of slides and areas to climb. This one even has a tot lot and a FedEx plane. Check it out:

On Thursday, Ryan accompanied me to school for a meeting. We filled up his back pack with activities, and apparently we had not used it since winter. In it, Ryan found his winter hat ("tobaggan" if you live here), which he proceeded to wear all day insisting that, "It might snow."

Monkey See, Monkey Do

Ryan adores Arlan. As he gets older, Ryan has been following Arlan around and doing everything he does. Last night at the ice cream place, Arlan would get up on the bench, and Ryan would get up on the bench. Arlan would turn around and look at us, and Ryan would turn around and look at us. It was so cute!!

Men Working!

Arlan came over for dinner and after, the boys took the tools outside to work on the play set!

Summer's here!

I am officially on summer vacation, which means Ryan and mama's fun time has begun! We went and signed up for the YMCA so we can take advantage of their fun outside pool! Ryan was a bit skeptical when I put his trunks on him (this is our first time without swimmie diapers) and even more so when I wanted him to get in the water, but he eventually got in and was jumping off the sides holding my hands!

P.S. The boys did make it all night in the tent! I saw Ryan poke his head out through my bedroom window at about 6 am. They came inside real quick, but then went out to breakfast and I got to sleep until 8:30! Thanks honey!

He even does windows!

Ryan has been using our little squirt bottle to water the flowers outside. Last night he asked if he could clean the windows. He proceeded to spray the back door windows, then had to come inside to get a towel to dry them off. Kept him busy for a half hour- too fun!

Maybe it's too early to post this...

...but the boys are camping outside tonight. I hope they make it all night!

Also, a picture I thought my parents might like. I didn't know Scott was taking cell phone pictures while I was in the visitor's center in Black Mountain! Thanks honey! And mom, I'll send you the picture!
