Christmas Gifts & New Year's Resolutions

Scott and I's gift to each other this Christmas was an elliptical machine. I was hoping it would get me up early to workout. So far, Scott's been riding it every other day, but I've only done it once. In my defense, I had to get up in the middle of the night with Ryan twice last week...

Wish us luck!

A little project

The first blogs I started reading were actually the blogs of people who scrapbook. Most of you know it is an obsession...er, hobby of mine. My friend Cory introduced me to the voyeuristic world of these scrapping celebrity's blogs and I have been hooked. If you're into this sort of thing, here's a few to check: Ali Edwards, Cathy Zielske, and Erin Lincoln (who happens to live in Frederick where her husband used to teach at my high school where his dad is (was?) librarian back when I was there!).

I didn't make my own blog until I read the blogs of my friends Cara and Gretchen and realized how easy it could be to share pictures and stories with our far away family and friends so easily.

Now, I know I'm no Ali or Cathy, but I thought I'd share a little project I made. It involves my family who visited at Thanskgiving, so I thought you all might like to see it. Everyone who was here filled out a card with their favorite Thanksgiving mempry and what they were thankful for right now. I got pictures of everyone and put all together. Here's how it turned out:

Here's how the front looks. It's made from a bunch of envelopes stuck together to make pockets.
Each pocket had someone's name on it and contained their photo and their responses to the questions I asked. It folds all the way out, but I could only scan two at a time.

Spring has Sprung?

In the last few weeks, I have seen daffodils beginning to bloom, green shoots starting to appear on irises and daylilies, and now this in my own front yard: my forsythia!

"Go back to sleep!" I want to tell it. There's sure to be some cold (and maybe snow/ice?) coming!

Paints and Cows

Just when you think all your Christmas presents have been unwrapped, more arrive in the mail. How exciting!

Ryan got some bath paints from his godparents, Cory and John. They have trumped all the other bath toys as Ryan wants only to paint in the tub now. Thank you!

Then, Scott's Christmas gift from my sister, Katy arrived. She added to our train collection with a new boxcar and there was a bonus- it was a cattle car complete with four cows figures!

We're having a bit of trouble getting them into the cattle car (not pictured above), but they seem to like riding in this other open air car (haven't been operating trains long enough to know its name, but we'll get there!). Thanks Katy!

Ryan Update

Sometime back in November, I remember thinking,'Wow, we are going to have to endure a lot of change with Ryan over the next year or so. At some point we're going to have to think about potty training, and he's going to have to move up to a regular bed. Maybe this summer.'

Ha.
Within a week of thinking that, Ryan was climbing out of the crib (I think I've posted that). Then, when we finally were all home for an extended period of time over Thanksgiving break we thought, what the heck, let's see what he thinks of using the potty. And he's done great!

So much for planning.
Wanted to post a few photos of some of these changes.

After about a month of the "big boy bed," we decided to remove the crib and rearrange his room. The bed is now where the crib was and I was able to create a little "nest" in the corner under his window because every now and then he likes to climb out of bed and snuggle up somewhere else with "my animals." I really thought the bed thing was going to be a fight, but he does great! He stays in his room (we've been closing the door for fear the cats will wake him if they jump on his bed in the middle of the night); just bangs on the door or hollers for us when he awakes. And he asked for the crib a few times, but not so much anymore.

Then there is our happy boy who now wears "big boy pants." He's been interested in this since the summer, but we've been slow to do it all out because of our traveling and being away from home. At this point, he's having few, if any accidents (made it through the whole Christmas trip with only some minor ones- none on the drive!) and still wearing diapers to sleep. We're so proud!

In other Ryan news, it was an artsy Christmas for the boy. He got lots of crayons, markers, play dough and an easel from us, so he is constantly putting all of this to work. "Draw with me, Mommy," he says. He's even using scissors! However, we've had to put those up because he wants to use them all the time and I'm not sure he understands yet that they could hurt him.

More Trains and New Year's Eve

Happy New Year!

Some updates: Terps beat Purdue 24-7. Ryan and I made it home safe on Saturday evening. A 12 hour drive from Charlotte (although we gained an hour) and 11 pit stops! Such is life with potty training.

I got some more train pictures from my mom to share:

Ryan and I on the turntable at the roundhouse and on a caboose.

We spent New Year's Eve with our friends that live around the corner from us. Ryan played with his buddy Arlan, we played Guitar Hero on their Playstation, and after the kids went to bed, we rang in midnight twice- Eastern Time and Central Time! Then we walked home.

Hope you had a happy and uneventful New Year!
